Sandstar walked slowly along the border, his gaze clouded as thought after thought assaulted his mind. He gazed at Honeydusk, his eyes softening when he did so. At least his mate was here, the stress wouldn't kill him so long as he had her. His train of thought cut short as Eclipseclan scent drifted in to his slightly parted maw. "Eclipseclan." He rumbled, alerting his patrol. Sandstar's tail raised a little. "Be cautious not agressive." The leader picked up his pace a small bit to come to the front of the patrol as they neared the Eclipseclanners. His gaze locked on to Frecklemask's instantly, purple colliding with yellow yet again. "Frecklemask." He rumbled, his greeting curt. In a heartbeat that memory that had been nagging him since the baytle came to the forefront of his mind. I know who you are. He thought. // Wildpaw forced his black fur to lay flat as he came face to face with his former clanmates-and even worse his former deputy. His eery silver gaze bored through them as if they weren't there, and he really wished they weren't.

Frecklemask eyed the patrol, stepping away slyly from a treestump she was drenching with EclipseClan scent.

"Sandstar," she said coolly, "Why am I not surprised?" Her voice rose and fell with her chest as she sighed, the land around them still draped with bloodstains and stray clumps of fur. Even worse, a light drizzle had begun- the beginning of the warmer months, Frecklemask supposed. The dusty she-cat stared across at the sandy leader. Dust poofed from her gentle pawsteps.

Honeydusk stopped at the sight of the EclipseClan cats, her green gaze cautious and guarded as she watched Sandstar regard the EclipseClan deputy. She stood with a defensive stance, and no fear showed in her gaze, but perhaps a guarded curiosity.

"Maybe because a battles recently happened between our two clans. The blood hasn't even faded, our scents are still intermingled here. It's expected that I as leader would take personal intrest in patrolling this border." He replied with what should have been an intellectual comeback, but instead sounded rather dull. Tired. Bored perhaps? In truth his heart wasn't in the same place it had been during battle now that he had figured out who she was to him. He doubted that she herself had come to that realisation. But, then again, she was a suprising she cat with a sharp mind. The drizzling rain thickened subtlety, the droplets beggining to seep in to his thick fur soaking him to his skin. The sound soothed him, and he was more than used to a wet pelt having grown up on the open moors. Though, he made a mental note to prepare for flooding if the weather continued. The mood was odd, moody, guarded, and perplexed on his end rather than agressive and cold which were the emotions one would expect in the wake of such a vicious battle. His eyes flitted to her ear and then the scars he had given her their first encounter. His shoulder ached subtly.

Frecklemask raised a brow at the shift in Sandstar's mood. He seemed- off? Guarded? Cautious and anxious in a perfect mixture of leadership. The she-cat looked up with a frown as the rain began to fall- her pelt stuck to her fur to show off every rib, seen clearly through her pelt. No matter how much she ate, it never fattened her to the same sleekness as her clanmates.

She shook out her coat and looked back down to Sandstar, "Don't dance around the fresh-kill pile, Sandstar," she spat, "You keep looking at me like that. Speak your mind." She hissed. She was tired of his gaze turning that odd emotion, it made her feel . . . sad. Nostalgic, but for what she didn't know.

Ravendeath smelled the Sunclanners before he saw them as he was turned the other way. He spun around and raced back over to Frecklemask, his form stiff and ready to defend her if necessary. He didn't growl or say anything at all. He just stood there, silent and attentive.

Ghostlymelody craned her neck to watch the scene. Queentiger leaned closer to her ear and whispered, "Well this just got interesting!"

Frecklemask looked intensely at Sandstar and then to the cats of her patrol- Hestia and Ravendeath on her side. But the deputy's wounds were still fresh and, despite how her paws itched, she didn't want another fight.

"Stand down," she said out of the corner of her mouth, "We've no reason to fight. Yet."

Sandstar's head tipped to one side, studying her mood as he had only seen her battle hungry and riled up. Yes, this was the cat he vaguely remembered. His tail swept over the wet grass behind him, causing sparkling clear droplets to fan out behind him. His purple gaze became more sure as he looked at the Eclipseclan deputy, and when he spoke his voice was clear and confident with a subtle hint of softness that a cat might use when speaking to someone they knew quite well. "I remembered, you know." Sandstar watched her for a moment before continueing. " Just a little at first. It was your scent that jogged the memory. And then..our similar build." He searched her face breifly, wondering if she remembered too. He was perpously being vague, and probably sounded slightly crazy. It was more for the Eclipseclan warriors sake, though. He knew his clan mates trusted him, and of course he would explain it later.

Frecklemask clenched her face, brow creasing as the corner of her mouth lifted in a small moment of confused shock. Remembered? Remembered what? she asked herself. To the she-cat, this truly was bizarre. She thought back to the days when she was an addict- but even then, her testament of no-toms was held fast by her lack of children. So she knew she hadn't laid with Sandstar.

Then, what was he talking about?

She put the pieces together in her head like a kit making a mound out of stones- one piece at a time until it all came crashing down in realization. Scents. Builds.

He thinks we're related? she thought, staring at Sandstar, expressionless. The scorn was gone from her yellow gaze. Memories flashed in her vision, untouched by the years as they had laid buried. The ones that she remembered from the battle too- being left behind in the city, watching her mother carry her brother further into the territory.

"I-I'll come back," her mother had said. Frecklemask remembered crying before being found, tossed from queen to queen like a piece of fresh-kill. An unlikely warrior- used as a whipping boy during her apprenticeship, a cat who could battle anybody and teach them how easy it was to win. Frecklemask had overcome her circumstance, her abandonment, her shame. She was the deputy fo EclipseClan. Heir to the leader position- she would lead them to greatness!

But as she looked into Sandstar's purple eyes, she almost whimpered. She felt a tear prick at her vision but she pushed it away. Before she could stop herself, her form began to tremble slightly and her voice, normally barking, commanding, demanding, was soft and subtle, the mew of a lost kit. Still looking for her mother.

"D-Dust?" she said into the rain. The thundrous storm around them hopefully hid it from her clanmates. Frecklemask didn't know what to do- did she step closer and risk being accused of conspiring? Did she step away and pretend not to care? She did care- a lifetime of living across the border from her blood. Her brother.

She stared blankly, yellow eyes wide, staring, her expression lost and confused. Dazed.

Like a lost kit.

Sandstar's gaze grew more certain, in an instant he knew she remembered, too. What he did not know, was how terribly life had treated her, though his own hadn't been much better. A breeze blew the rain in his direction, striking the rain in to his eyes and with it her familiar scent struck him full in the face. His eyes closed briefly to blink away the water. Memories suddenly ignited in his mind with the ferocity of a monster striking him on a thunderpath. His tail grew stiff. Sandstar couldn't remember his mothers last words to him, but he remembered how frightened and bewildered Frecklemask had looked the last time he had seen her. Of course he remembered that, it was the first time his eyes had opened. It was a rainy day, the sky hidden by black angry clouds much like today. Stress and confusion had made his little heart thud in his chest as he was carried away from his sister..she had been left, alone. The memory ended, flashing to him being dropped suddenly in a patch of purple heather. He had scrambled to get free--only to see his mother fleeing with an urgency in to the storm. Sandstar had never seen her again, but he wouldn't forget the scent of the blood splattered on the plant he was hidden in. He had been found not long after, and he too had been passed from queen to queen and then ultimately weened too early because finding a queen to nurse him had grown too tiresome, and they couldn't be bothered with an outsider like him. He had been alone since kit hood, ignored completely as if he was nothing throughout his apprenticeship. He had spent long hard days training himself with the sun burning his back, his chest burning from exertion just to prove himself to his clan, because his mentor couldn't be bothered to train someone who wasn't part of the whole that was Sunclan. To prove that he belonged, that he was one of them, he never rested. Everything he knew he learned by watching others, listening carefully to conversations, and teaching himself. At his warrior cerimony shame had filled his chest when he earned his name, and mear grumbles reached his ears rather than the cheers everyone else recieved. In his warrior days Sandstar had then drowned himself in patrols of any kind, always out of camp either hunting, patrolling, or training. Every night without fail he had collapsed in to his nest with multiple wounds marring his body, passing out from exaustion, then waking up the next day to do it all again. All to be the best warrior he could be for his clan. He stopped thinking about himself in those days. Only seeing himself as unworthy, and cats slowly began to notice him...that is untill Omnistar had called him to be deputy. Finally Omnistar himself had taken notice of him. Finally, when he had just started to be excepted as one part of the whole--deputyship had been thrown upon him. It was a blessing and a curse. He had earned it with hard work and dedication, only to be rewarded with one of the hardest eras Sunclan had ever seen. He was blamed every day for not doing more about the murders but truthfully he was doing all he could do. On top of that he was having to navigate his clan through war. Sandstar had never rested or taken it easy. Not a day in his life. He had given up on caring about himself when his previous mate Barksong dissapeared out of thin air-along with three of his kits. Only Desertpaw remained, and she constanly rebelled against him. He had wondered if it was because he was unworthy still. He blamed it on him for a long time untill he had met Honeydusk. She had touched his heart, and had shown him who he really was. Made him feel like he had mattered. Made him see himself. And now...now he had found his sister. His littermate. A thousand questions burned in his violet gaze. Had she endured something similar? Was she like him? His mind slowly returned to the present as he heard her call him by his birth name, and her first name surfaced on his tongue in return. "Speckle." He pronounced, his brows beginning to draw together as the shock of the memories receded. "What happened to you? Why...?" Why had they been sperated? Why had their mother left? He asked uncertainty, finishing the question in his head. The tall muscular tom took a slow step forward, his toes almost touching the invisable border.

Yellow and Purple mixed again as Frecklemask approached- she dared not cross the border, but she could not- would not break the gaze of Sandstar. Frecklemask could've laughed or cried- this felt cruel. Here she was, a skinny visage of a cat- ridiculed by her clan for her attempts at leadership. Across from Sandstar, a startlingly noble cat. Everything made sense all at once and it was overwhelming.

To Frecklemask, the ribs that shown through her own pelt were coated with muscle and pomp on Sandstar. Her sunken and gaunt cheeks and hallow visage of a face that terrified kits- reflected on Sandstar was the same base, only brought up by different circumstance. She almost vomited. She'd struggled. Fought for every scrap of herself. Every piece of fresh-kill. Every battle won, every nest she'd ever slept in. She'd struggled with addiction and won and he'd never even known what struggle was. To her, he was a taunt from StarClan. This is what you could've been.

She blinked, breaking the silence, and in a second her gaze turned angry. "Where were you!" she said softly, her voice not even carried by the wind. We should meet- we- we need to talk about this . . . How to tell him though?

The wind changed direction, blowong wuth a new fury. Rain pelted his soaked right flank with a vengance--it was as if the storm was growing angry on their behalf. Water dripped down his face, tracing his rugged handsome features. His ears flattened. "I was alone." He replied, his deep voice muffled by the loud pitter patter of fat raindrops. His fur spiked along his spine, creating a ridge. "I'm sorry. If I had known..we were both so young-" his voice faltered and once again he was blaming himself for something that had been out of his control. The toms body tensed, his muscles rippling. He had to make this right-he could give her a better life. He could help her. He didn't want to see her suffer anymore...he had always dreamed of having a real family--one that shared his blood. "Come with me," he meowed in a snap decision. Was he crazy? Maybe. But he could give her a new start. They had missed their adolescence together, but they could spend their adulthood getting to know each other. They could be a family. She was the yang to his yin. Sandstars paws ached to step forward and comfort his sister, she didn't deserve the life she had been given.

Frecklemask took a different turn, a snarl beginning to burn at her chest. Her tail lashed behind her, her ears drew back as far as they could go. He thinks he can make up for it! she scoffed mentally, feeling her claws slip from their sheathes instinctively.

"You think we can just make nice, just like that?" she said louder, backing away from him with a hint of mischevious plotting in her gaze. She had to ensure the rest of her clanmates in the patrol couldn't guess what had happened. "As I've said before, Sandstar, I'll never give up an EclipseClan warrior just so you can have your petty revenge. Thundersong is ours."

The words were empty. Beneath the meaning, she hoped Sandstar knew what a detriment it would be to her standing if it came out of her blood relations. Her face was angry but her eyes were anxious- he preyed the cats on the other side of the border would play along.

Sandstar's mouth dropped open, he looked at her bewildered by her reaction. He searched her harsh expression. His heart cracked for a moment before he caught the anxious look in her gaze and realization dawned on him. It was a ploy. Now, Sandstar wasn't the lying type and he never hid anything other than his self loathing and any unleaderly feelings like pain. His only exception to this rule was if it was for the good of someone he cared for. After the breif confused hesitation, his face contorted in to a mask of spite that didn't reach his gaze. "Justice needs to be served, and it will be-one way or another." He warned in a fersone growl. He leaned forward an inch from her face, his voice a low growl only she could hear over the rain. "Tomorrow. Same time?" He hissed softly, baring his teeth looking threatening expression.

Frecklemask felt relief sink over her back at Sandstar's words and for a second she wondered if the tom would use their newfound relation to make her give up Thundersong for real. But honestly, she didn't care anymore. She had a brother, and her conflicted feelings encompassed her confusion on whether or not to turn over Thundersong.

"You must love hearing the word 'no' to want to hear it again so soon," Frecklemask warned with a dry laugh. "Very well, Sandstar. I'll trust you to leave the border peacefully this time," she said with a small and hissing emphasis on 'this time'. She vividly remembered Sandstar's blood seeping between her paws as she'd battled him- the power coursing through her. Did he forgive her just because they were siblings? She hoped not.

"Let's finish the patrol," she ordered, and with another mistrusting glance towards Honeydusk and Sandstar, Frecklemask departed down the border, passing in uncomfortable silence. Behind her, her tail-tip flicked.

(They finish the patrol and walk back to EcC Camp)
