New Clans Planning

Posted by Ember on August 18, 2017 at 5:05 PM

Update: a formal poll regarding the new clan's name can be found here. Once you complete the poll, there will be an option to "see previous responses" that will let you see where everyone else is standing. If it's close or we get a bunch of "other" responses, we could potentially re-poll.

The vote on what to do about EarthClan closed yesterday, with those in support of keeping EarthClan and forming a new clan receiving the most votes. While this new clan won’t be able to actually come together until we have EarthClan moved into DawnClan’s territory, we should start planning for the new clan now so we know what they want to be when they are formed.

Please limit discussion of how we will form this clan to what immediately affect the clan’s identity. Keeping plot-planning to the actual Plot Planning Blog Entry will help us keep on-topic here as we focus on building up two new clan identities. As well, this is not the place to discuss who will be the leader of the new clan. I will decide who it will be using our usual criteria and announce the new leader and deputy closer to when the clan is formed. The best thing you can do now to increase your chances is participating actively in this blog and following the suggestions on the How Leaders and Deputies are Chosen.

I think the best way to go about this would be to see what the established clans are based on, and then use that as a framework for building EarthClan and the new, still unnamed clan. So, here is more or less what I believe each clan identity boils down to.

MoonClan

  • Proud/arrogant, honorable, and courageous
  • Conformist and the most nationalistic clan
  • Moderately skilled hunters and fighters
  • Highly value discipline; regimented day to day lives; strict clan hierarchy
  • Suspicious of outsiders
  • Strong belief in StarClan and The Warrior Code

NightClan

  • Cunning, fierce, and ambitious.
  • Individualistic
  • Strong fighters but weak hunters, mostly scavenge for food
  • Loose clan hierarchy and administration, with a low value placed on discipline
  • Very accepting of outsiders
  • Weak belief in StarClan and in the value of the Warrior Code

DawnClan

  • Peaceful, compassionate, and forgiving.
  • Individualistic with low value on discipline
  • Moderate hunters and weak fighters, have the unique skill of fishing
  • Paternalistic leadership style with a flexible hierarchy and a Leisurely day to day existence
  • Moderately accepting of outsiders
  • Moderate belief in StarClan and generally follow the Warrior Code

SunClan

  • Cautious, intelligent, strive to embody “clan before the individual.”
  • Value teamwork and place little stock in the individual; conformist
  • Strong hunters but weak fighters
  • Strict leadership style and hierarchy, highly demanding expectations of warriors
  • Suspicious of outsiders
  • Moderate belief in StarClan, but follow The Warrior Code to the letter.

Based on those facts, here’s one direction we could potentially go with the new clans, assuming that EarthClan ends up in DawnClan’s old territory and the NightClan rebels resettle in NightClan’s old territory and form the new clan.

New Clan (Possible names: EclipseClan, SkyClan, CometClan, GalaxyClan, NovaClan, MeteorClan, NebulaClan, please suggest more)

  • Resourceful, fierce, domineering
  • Individualistic
  • Strong fighters but weak hunters, mostly scavenge for food
  • Rigid clan hierarchy and administration, with each rank asserting themselves over lower ranks
  • Moderately accepting of outsiders. Only accepts those who they deem strong enough, or alternatively, those who actually seem committed to their clan. Expect all outsiders to assimilate into clan life.
  • Weak belief in StarClan, but a high degree of value in Warrior Code

EarthClan

  • Tolerant, compassionate, and grounded
  • Individualistic with low value on discipline, strives to encourage each cat’s strengths rather than make a uniform
  • Moderate hunters and weak fighters, have the unique skill of fishing
  • Paternalistic leadership style with a flexible hierarchy and a Leisurely day to day existence
  • Very accepting of outsiders
  • Extremely variable beliefs in StarClan and the Warrior Code

Of course, this is only one way to go about it, and I want to hear all of your thoughts on which direction we should head in to creating these new clans.

How 'bout Fireclan?

We could do that, but I'd prefer if we kept the astrological theme going. MoonClan, SunClan, EarthClan, and FireClan doesn't quite sound right.

Fateclan but idk about that, since they have little belief in Starclan, but then you can change your fate, so it's an arguable topic?

I really like the Sun-Moon Earth-Sky idea

But also for deciding the leader, Perhaps a little competition? Since I think that would be interesting. It'd be like the competition they had in the warrior cat books after they moved to the lake?

I think due to the new clan being more battle oriented and strength over hunting, the clan name should reflect that. So I think EclipseClan might be smart, or NovaClan considering Eclipse is somewhat of "us over others" like the moon over the sun, and Nova would be of the strength of an explosion, and considering they are also some of the weakest in belief in StarClan, it would make sense that they were named of the destruction of a star.

I'd like for Fleet-tail or Rust to become leader, but I'll doubt that will happen.

I agree with Pallet, Skyclan doesn't seem to fit the description of fierce and Domineering. Yet Meteorclan can be put in the list since they are huge, yet a big threat

EclipseClan is definitely my favorite. It's a tiny bit hard to pronounce, but it suits the theme well and eclipses are a result of blocked light from another celestial body, so they do fit the domineering theme and the idea that the city clan will, by default, stand out.

I believe that we should Narrow the list of names down to top three and have people vote? That way it's fair, and we could get one specific name.

I'd think that Craterclan is good, because Moonclan has a moon thing, and a the moon has craters.

Yeah, we colud have a vote when it's narrowed down some, but for now we're just throwing around ideas.

Hmmm... I'm not feeling CraterClan either. It is dependent on MoonClan, and city cats and MoonClanners have never gotten along too well.

I'm really feeling EclipseClan and NovaClan. And what they stand for. I'll definitely be thinking up some future characters for this clan.~

Ecilpseclan could work because when the moon blocks out the sun, it creates coldness. I think that this would be great since: 1. theres an eclipse soon lol 2. there could be a plot event based off of the "blocking out the sun"
Novaclan could also work like Pallet said
Nebulaclan would be on the other, not really a fit, since Nebula's hold life and are more ya know, kind?

True, we're getting a early release that day, Monday, which note that I live where it says on my profile.

Litten, please keep things that are only revlevant to the clan planning.
I agree with that, Redflare. I think that having a plot about possibly blocking out the sun would be cool if they were EclipseClan, maybe trying to block out belief in StarClan in some way to the other clans? Like them trying to block out their belief to bring out some coldness or hostility against the other clans. Maybe something like a prophecy?

Of what's been discussed so far, I think what Pallet mentioned makes a lot sense (about a NovaClan or EclipseClan). Whilst NovaClan sounds a bit more natural (in my opinion), I think the meaning behind EclipseClan is more powerful. (Also, the 'blocking out the sun' thing could lead to some very interesting plots...)
On a much different note, I think that a name like SkyClan could work as well. However, I agree that it wouldn't represent the projected values very well (and it's already been used in the original books). I would suggest StormClan, seeing as typically, 'earth' embodies stability, while storms are regarded as wild and uncontrolled (and they're associated with the sky, opposite of earth), however there's already been a StormClan in the history of this site. WindClan would also follow this theory, but we'd run into the same problem as we did with the name SkyClan, seeing as it's already been used in the books. Ultimately, this paragraph doesn't really culminate in much, other than a general throwing arounds of thoughts, rather than specific ideas.
For a different idea, although I may be stretching it quite a bit too far with this suggestion, what about RiftClan (or something similar such as RivenClan or FissureClan)? As I mentioned before, the element of earth (If we look at it from that perspective, rather than a celestial one), generally represents stability, grounding, and solidity. A rift, meanwhile, is the embodiment of imbalance, or, in more extreme cases, chaos. Depending on how this new clan was formed, it could also represent the division of the current clans, and members of these clans (specifically EarthClan) split from their old clans to join this new clan. So, although a rift isn't the opposite of earth in a literal sense, like a sky-related or celestial-related name, it is, in a way, a metaphorical opposite.
